Our lives are stories.
I think most people would agree with that. At each stage of our lives, we’re trying
to make a mark on this world. Well, if not on this world then at least we want to
seize control and ownership of this life that we have got – and drive it in
whatever direction we wish. One can’t help thinking that most of us are living
by the words of Bon Jovi’s song ‘It’s My Life’.
Yet our lives are
merely short stories. Individual episodes that are part of a bigger plot – a greater
story. And to understand this better story,
we need to know its Author – the one who gives meaning to the plot, the
characters, the setting and finally, its denouement.
This story is not
about us, but it does involve us.
The story begins with
the Creation of the world and ends with the establishment of God’s kingdom. It
is about how God works out his plan to redeem fallen humankind progressively through
Jesus Christ.
' All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;'
Yes, merely in the sense that the play is not
about us; not merely in the sense
that we are given parts and should play them well. And so I embark on a journey
of discovery as I head to Durham University. It is just a small scene in the
unfolding of the grand narrative of God’s drama, but I am excited to be part of
that tale.
